Pianists Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature

This reference book is an invaluable resource for teachers, students and performers for evaluating and selecting piano solo literature. Concise and thoroughly researched, thousands of works, from the Baroque through the Contemporary periods, have been graded and evaluated in detail. Includes an alphabetical list of composers, explanations of works, and much more.

REVIEWS

1.It deliberately limits itself to things the author believes no harder than the Bach Three-Part Inventions or Beethoven Op 49. It also largely avoids transcriptions. The text tends to be about as succinct as that in Hinson, and thus just as frustrating: a little more detail, even if opinionated, often would be welcome. It also mostly limits itself to things in print at the time of its publication over twenty years ago. With the rise of the web and IMSLP this is an unfortunate limitation for things published in past centuries; and, of course, it necessarily omits the wonderful resources now published electronically directly by composers.

On the good side, I think there is a serious, and welcome, effort to include some pretty obscure things, particularly relatively easy ones. I’m pretty sure there are things in here I’ve not seen cited elsewhere. And it shows considerable respect to some valuable, easy pieces that aren’t profound enough to get much play in most other reference works. Again, it is over twenty years old, though, so nothing really recent, nor reflecting recent revisions of taste, are included.

2.It does have an oddly hit or miss quality in some cases. For example, only a few of the Mompou Cancion e Danza and Impressiones Intimas are mentioned, though I’m pretty sure many of those neglected are still in the difficulty range covered.

As a physical object it is substandard: it is feebly bound and pages were coming out within an hour of my first opening it. This is particular frustrating in a reference work.

On balance, I guess I’d categorize it as a good start, but it could benefit tremendously from a thorough revision and updating. Though perhaps in this day and age such a revision would be better as a living on-line resource rather than as a static book.

REVIEW

1. I was skeptical of this series at first because so many books have tackled Disney related stories.
But it wasn’t long into this first book here that I realized that this was unique.
It had a bit of everything a YA book could and should have.
It has a good story line, good mystery, great characters, good versus evil, heroes versus villains, old and new technology, but mostly a sit on the edge of your chair excitement and expectations.
And it was all very relatable.
Good job Mr. Pearson, good job indeed!
Sincerely,
Alan McDonald

2.

I got this book for free after seeing it on the Kindle Buffett list. I did not know the author or the series but chose it because the description made me feel like it could be like the Harry Potter series. The book does have some resemblance to Harry Potter. Similarities to Potter: (1) The book involves magic (good and bad); (2) the book involves kids befriending one another for a greater cause (instead of Harry, Ron and Hermione et al — there is Finn, Maybeck, Charlene, Willa, and Phillby) ; (3) This book involves one main boy being the leader (Instead of Harry it’s Finn); (4) the book has a wise old man character who speaks in riddles of sorts and is never as direct as he should be who guides the kids ( Instead of Dumbledore it’s Wayne).

Summary:
13 year old Lawrence Finnegan Whitman (Finn) was chosen to become a Disney Interactive Host (DHI) along with 4 other kids. They all start having the same “dream” and then are pulled into a quest to solve a riddle and stop evil from taking over the Park and the World outside the park.

I am a Florida native and have visited Disney World more times than I care to remember but this book made me see it with new eyes and I appreciated that. The book also made me want to learn more about Disney – the park and the man. I am likely to read the rest of the books in the series and believe that if you are an adult who enjoyed the Harry Potter series then you will probably enjoy this book as well.

The War on Normal People The Truth About America’s

The New York Times bestseller from 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, this thought-provoking and prescient call-to-action outlines the urgent steps America must take, including Universal Basic Income (UBI), to stabilize our economy amid rapid technological change and automation. The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future–now. One recent estimate predicts 45 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next twelve years–jobs that won’t be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society?

In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics and automation software are making millions of Americans’ livelihoods irrelevant. The consequences of these trends are already being felt across our communities in the form of political unrest, drug use, and other social ills. The future looks dire-but is it unavoidable?

In The War on Normal People, Yang imagines a different future–one in which having a job is distinct from the capacity to prosper and seek fulfillment. At this vision’s core is Universal Basic Income, the concept of providing all citizens with a guaranteed income-and one that is rapidly gaining popularity among forward-thinking politicians and economists. Yang proposes that UBI is an essential step toward a new, more durable kind of economy, one he calls “human capitalism.”

Review

“Andrew Yang is one of those rare visionaries who puts dreams into action. The War on Normal People is both a clear-eyed look at the depths of our social and economic problems and an innovative roadmap toward a better future.”―Arianna Huffington, Founder and CEO of Thrive Global

“This book is a must read. Andrew Yang is tackling one of the biggest challenges facing our country the way only an entrepreneur can, but unlike most, he sees the big picture. Making money is good for you-but building a strong society and strong people is good for all of us. The topics Andrew addresses in this book aren’t about some dystopian future way down the road. These things are happening today, and every entrepreneur should read this book to understand the challenges of the next decade.”―Daymond John, star of ABC’s Shark Tank, bestselling author of The Power of Broke, and founder of FUBU

Discover your own deep well of wisdom in Intuition: Knowing Beyond Logic―from one of the greatest spiritual teachers of the twentieth century.

Intuition deals with the difference between the intellectual, logical mind and the more encompassing realm of spirit. Logic is how the mind knows reality, intuition is how the spirit experiences reality. Osho’s discussion of these matters is wonderfully lucid, occasionally funny, and thoroughly engrossing.

All people have a natural capacity for intuition, but often social conditioning and formal education work against it. People are taught to ignore their instincts rather than to understand and use them as a foundation for individual growth and development―and in the process they undermine the very roots of the innate wisdom that is meant to flower into intuition.

In this volume, Osho pinpoints exactly what intuition is and gives guidelines for how to identify its functioning in others and ourselves. You will learn to distinguish between genuine intuitive insight and the “wishful thinking” that can often lead to mistaken choices and unwanted consequences. Includes many specific exercises and meditations designed to nourish and support each individual’s natural intuitive gifts.

Osho challenges readers to examine and break free of the conditioned belief systems and prejudices that limit their capacity to enjoy life in all its richness. He has been described by the Sunday Times of London as one of the “1000 Makers of the 20th Century” and by Sunday Mid-Day (India) as one of the ten people―along with Gandhi, Nehru, and Buddha―who have changed the destiny of India. Since his death in 1990, the influence of his teachings continues to expand, reaching seekers of all ages in virtually every country of the world.

About the Author

Osho is one of the most provocative and inspiring spiritual teachers of the twentieth century. Known for his revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation, the influence of his teachings continues to grow, reaching seekers of all ages in virtually every country of the world. He is the author of many books, including Love, Freedom, AlonenessThe Book of Secrets, and Innocence, Knowledge, and Wonder.

Review

“The chief strength of the book is that it is perfectly comprehensive, covering essential literature ranging from general issues of value theory to metaethics to ethical theory and then on to applied ethics. Shafer-Landau’s writing style is very clear and perfectly appropriate for any college-level student.”–Jamie Phillips, Clarion University of Pennsylvania

“This is the best introductory textbook of primary sources in moral philosophy. Paired with The Fundamentals of Ethics, this is perfectly suited for an introductory undergraduate course in ethics.”–Aleksander Pjevalica, University of Texas at El Paso

“Shafer-Landau’s writing is exceptional. The introductions tend to be spot-on. The book’s affordable pricing (especially as part of the package with The Fundamentals of Ethics) and small size are added bonuses.”–Robert M. Farley, Hillsborough Community College

“I think that this book is great: I like that it is shorter than the huge 700+-page books out there, and way less expensive too. I also like that there are instructor manual resources available.”–Phil Jenkins, Marywood University

“I have always liked the test bank questions that OUP supplies with its course materials, and these are no exception (I can’t say the same about every publisher!).”–David Burris, Arizona Western College

He is a College Board consultant for AP Calculus and presents one-day and two-day workshops and leads AP Summer Institutes. He is a grader for the AP Calculus Exam. He is also a T3 Regional Instructor concentrating on the TI-Nspire.

Just recently bought this book to prep for my Calculus BC class in the fall for some summer prep. Overall, the book has great practice problems ranging from easy ones for a quick refresher to hard ones. The thing I absolutely detest about this book is the explanation. Yes, they have the right answers and show some steps, but no word explanations (rarely) and skip a lot of steps. I ended have to look up the steps more in depth in Symolab and it can take me some 20-40 minutes to actually get the problem simply because Barron’s cannot list out the steps more in depth. I imagine this would be good if you are just reviewing and supplementing, but as a book to learn like me, I would say any website online is better than this. Will update on how this book helped me with my actual AP exam and if it is good as a supplement!

Biography

Hi, I’m Nielson!

Once upon a time, I was an ambitious student hoping to get into a top university. I struggled to do well on the SAT (barely above average), so my parents sent me to classes that didn’t help and gave me books that never went beyond the basics. They didn’t know any better. After a lot of failure and frustration, I decided to self-study and figure out the test myself. My efforts paid off because I eventually scored in the top 1% of all test takers (this was the old exam). Since then, I’ve stayed up-to-date with the test prep world as a teacher and an author, helping thousands of students improve their own scores. Unlike many other “experts” out there, I’ve actually taken both the SAT and ACT in their current forms, scoring a perfect 1600 and a 35, respectively.

I created The College Panda to be the resource I wish I had when I was a student. If you’re an ambitious student who’s striving for that high score and wants the most comprehensive test prep out there, then these are the books for you.

REVIEW

I had been on the hunt for a good self-published book for kids, and I found one! After scrolling through ages of diary of a wimpy kid ripoffs and fart books, I have found a excellent self-published book. I would say this would be good for reluctant reader boys aged anywhere from 7, but maybe up to, 13.
I really felt it was important to let you know that I’m not one to treat a self-published book as a traditionally published book because I know there is a lot of junk out there, and that I found this publisher quality.
Verdict: A good read, self-published!

The Expanse Hardcover Boxed Set: Leviathan Wakes, Caliban’s War, Abaddon’s Gate: Now a Prime Original Series

READ or DOWNLOAD

For the first time in hardcover, the first three novels in James S. A. Corey’s New York Times bestselling epic science fiction saga the Expanse. Now a Prime Original series.“Interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written.”- George R.R. Martin
Humanity has colonized the solar system, but two hundred years after migrating into space, mankind is in turmoil.
When a reluctant ship’s captain and washed-up detective find themselves involved in the case of a missing girl, what they discover brings our solar system to the brink of civil war, and exposes the greatest conspiracy in human history.

Review

“It’s been too long since we’ve had a really kickass space opera. Leviathan Wakes is interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written, the kind of SF that made me fall in love with the genre way back when, seasoned with a dollop of horror and a dash of noir. Jimmy Corey writes with the energy of a brash newcomer and the polish of a seasoned pro. So where’s the second book?”
George R. R. Martin on Leviathan Wakes

“Riveting interplanetary thriller.”―Publishers Weekly on Leviathan Wakes

“An excellent space operatic debut in the grand tradition of Peter F. Hamilton.”
Charles Stross on Leviathan Wakes

“A politically complex and pulse-pounding page-turner…. Corey perfectly balances character development with action… series fans will find this installment the best yet.”
Publishers Weekly on Abaddon’s Gate

“High adventure equaling the best space opera has to offer, cutting-edge technology, and a group of unforgettable characters bring the third installment of Corey’s epic space drama (after Caliban’s War and Leviathan Wakes) to an action-filled close while leaving room for more stories to unfold. Perhaps one of the best tales the genre has yet to produce, this superb collaboration between fantasy authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck should reawaken an interest in old-fashioned storytelling and cinematic pacing. Highly recommended.”
Library Journal (starred review) on Abaddon’s Gate

“Literary space opera at its absolute best.”
io9 on Abaddon’s Gate

“[T]he authors are superb with the exciting bits: Shipboard coups and battles are a thrill to follow.”
Washington Post on Abaddon’s Gate
