The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration

The Soul of an Octopus A Surprising Exploration

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness

Another New York Times bestseller from the author of The Good Good Pig, this “fascinating…touching…informative…entertaining” (Daily Beast) book explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus—a surprisingly complex, intelligent, and spirited creature—and the remarkable connections it makes with humans.

In pursuit of the wild, solitary, predatory octopus, popular naturalist Sy Montgomery has practiced true immersion journalism. From New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, she has befriended octopuses with strikingly different personalities—gentle Athena, assertive Octavia, curious Kali, and joyful Karma. Each creature shows her cleverness in myriad ways: escaping enclosures like an orangutan; jetting water to bounce balls; and endlessly tricking companions with multiple “sleights of hand” to get food.

Scientists have only recently accepted the intelligence of dogs, birds, and chimpanzees but now are watching octopuses solve problems and are trying to decipher the meaning of the animal’s color-changing techniques. With her “joyful passion for these intelligent and fascinating creatures” (Library Journal Editors’ Spring Pick), Montgomery chronicles the growing appreciation of this mollusk as she tells a unique love story. By turns funny, entertaining, touching, and profound, The Soul of an Octopus reveals what octopuses can teach us about the meeting of two very different minds.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Abel Debritto, a former Fulbright scholar and current Marie Curie fellow, works in the digital humanities. He is the author of Charles Bukowski, King of the Underground, and the editor of the Bukowski collections On WritingOn Cats, and On Love.

These crude and raw feelings are exactly what we need when we don’t find anything real around. It’s life as it is, from the perspective of a man that lived so much, and given in the most honest way he could.

Sometimes I felt sad, sometimes I felt his joy, his sarcasm and his irony. I felt I lived a whole different life after reading these poems, and it was such an adventurous life, in its own, unique way.

I guess this is something one can read after living the ups and downs of life, and I’m sure I’ll read and understand it differently 10 years from now.

Indian Horse A Nove

Indian Horse: A Nove

Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present – and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who “never seems to waste a shot” (New York Times).

After being taken forcibly from his family, Saul is placed in an abusive boarding school determined to expunge his Ojibway traditions and knowledge. But he finds salvation each morning at dawn, practicing hockey alone on the school’s makeshift ice rink. Saul’s gift is undeniable: He quickly rises from his school’s all-Ojibway team to the white-dominated regional circuit. As his skills improve and he gains notoriety, however, each of his victories on the ice is met by racism and hate. As the years pass, Saul must reconcile his passion – the game he loves, that allowed him to escape poverty – with the harshness of a world that will never make him entirely welcome.

Unfolding against the bleak loveliness of Northern Ontario – all rock, marsh, bog, and cedar – this is a singular story of resilience from a beloved storyteller.

I recently read ‘Medicine Walk’ by Wagamese and it was so good that I rushed to read ‘Indian Horse’, another book of his. It was no disappointment. The writing soars and the story is one that evolves over time and speaks to generations of Native American and Native Alaskan children who have spent their childhoods in boarding schools.

As the novel opens, Saul Indian Horse is in a rehabilitation center for treatment of his alcoholism. He has hit bottom and his sponsor has asked him to tell his story. Saul is reluctant to share but, with time, and with a visit to his roots, the reader gradually learns his history.

Saul’s great passion was ice hockey and he was so good at it that he made the NHL. He loved the game, the way it let him escape the poison in his mind, and he loved the camaraderie of the team. Soon, after joining the major league, he finds that he is feeling more rage and anger than enjoyment. He decides to leave the team just as his teammates and coach have decided to kick him out. Saul wanders from bar to bar, drink to drink, until he is so down and out that his life is without meaning. What happened to this man with the passion for the game, the lust to play hockey and soar with the sport?

The answer to Saul’s descent lies in the narrative he tells to his sponsor once he returns to rehab after visiting his now crumbled boarding school, the places he lived as a youth, and his renewed connection to his Ojibway heritage. To say any more would be to provide spoilers. I highly recommend this amazing book that is the story of one man but is also representative of a whole generation of Native American children. It is an amazing book with insight and understanding of those who are culturally outcast by mainstream society. Saul’s story is one that will lift your heart and wet your eyes. It is a book to cherish and remember long after the last page is read.

When We Fight, We Win! weaves together interviews with today’s most successful activists and artists from across the country and beyond—including Patrisse Cullors-Brignac, Bill McKibben, Clayton Thomas-Muller, Karen Lewis, Favianna Rodriguez, Rea Carey, and Gaby Pacheco, among others—with narrative recountings of strategies and campaigns alongside full-color photos. It includes a foreword by Rinku Sen and an afterword by Antonia Darder.

Gay Girl, Good God The Story of Who I Was

Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was, and Who God Has Always Been

In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could?

At age nineteen, Jackie came face-to-face with what it meant to be made new. And not in a church, or through contact with Christians. God broke in and turned her heart toward Him right in her own bedroom in light of His gospel.

Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.

About the Author

Jackie Hill Perry is a writer, poet, and artist whose work has been featured on the Washington Times, The 700 Club, Desiring God, The Gospel Coalition, and other publications. Since becoming a Christian in 2008, she has been compelled to use her speaking and teaching gifts to share the light of the gospel of God as authentically as she can. At home she is a wife to Preston and Mommy to Eden and Autumn.

I’ve been a fan of Jackie’s work for years, since I discovered ‘A Poem About Weed’ on YouTube. I bought this book and read it in one day as I nursed my newborn round the clock (shout out to the brand-new and sleep-deprived mamas out there!)

I found Jackie’s story captivating and descriptive while avoiding the graphic tastelessness that sometimes characterizes people’s stories of sexual sin. This prose is clearly written by a woman with the heart of a poet; I couldn’t help but be reminded of Toni Morrison’s Beloved as I read it, the first novel I ever encountered that was written in a stream of consciousness. It’s unusual and the metaphors are thick and heavy if you aren’t used to that style, but for those of us familiar with Jackie’s work this should come as no surprise.

What did surprise me was how carelessly edited it was. Grammatical errors, incorrect word usage (ie: using the word “weary” when the one that was needed was “wary”) and convoluted sentence structure detracted from the quality of an otherwise solid piece of work.

I think there is enough rave about this book and almost everyone around me heard about this book, doesn’t matter if they are doing PM interviews or not. And I do think everyone whose interview entails product should read the book to get an idea of key concepts and interview question types.

I decided not to repeat the good part of the book, but focus on something I feel this book left to desire and after I failed some PM interviews (Full disclosure: I don’t have official PM experience). This book does provide some frameworks for you to use to answer questions; however, it does not really present how you actually apply these in your answers, at least I didn’t see much in the example questions/answers. So I was still left in haze when I tried to structure my answer to some questions. Not to promote one book or another, but I think you will be able to form more structured thoughts by reading Lewis Lin’s Decode and Conquer. I recommend to read both so that you have a much better perspective on PM interviews.16 people found this helpful
